Obsolescence Management: Successful management revolves around the ability to predict future availability and usage of all components used in a system. At the core of a successful program is an accurate indentured bill of materials (BoM). Primary resources for the BoMs are Tech Orders and source control drawings. Once those are loaded into a predictive database (like AVCOM), the successful program manager will proactively utilize research, projection capabilities, commonality and shared resolution data to manage obsolescence as manufacturers discontinue manufacturing their parts. A must for a successful program includes the involvement of equipment specialists, a system engineer and an item manager, as well as the program manager.
Establishing a successful program requires "buy-in" at the highest levels of management, with a commitment to pursue and maintain a well-balanced DMSMS team with access to all necessary education, training, tools and cooperative partners to effectively manage DMSMS. Valuable sources of information on establishing a successful program include the Department of Defense DMSMS Guidebook (provide a link to the guidebook) and the Air Force Materiel Command Case Resolution Guide (provide a link to the guide).
