Eliminating Obsolescence Driven Redesigns

Eleven obsolete parts on the V-22 Crash Survivable Memory Unit were identified as the basis for redesigning of the unit.

The parts list was provided to OSC Component Resolution Group for evaluation of solution options. The parts were indeed found to be obsolete. However, the Component Resolution Group found adequate sources of supply for 9 of 11 parts. For the remaining two parts the Component Engineering Group found suitable substitutes which could be qualified for use in the CSMU.

The result was that the redesign of the CSMU was effectively avoided, while being adequately supported for production and sustainment. The estimated redesign cost avoidance was $1M to $3M.
