On December 22, 2003, an Air Advisory notice was issued from ASC/ENSA to all WR/ALC Directorates. The advisory warned of the potential risk of exploding Manganese Dioxide based cathodes in tantalum capacitors. A list of 35,187 part numbers assigned to tantalum capacitors with an MN02 cathode was compiled and used for an AVCOM Impact Analysis.
Moments later, system engineers were informed that the AN/ARC-229/230 and AN/ARC-190 were affected platforms with nine of the part numbers on the list. They also knew how many assemblies were affected, how many capacitors were on those assemblies, the reference designators of those parts, Tech Order, figure, index, qualified replacements for those parts and where they could be procured.
